Day 29 (aka running daily log week six-ish)

Day 29 - Monday, Sept 29, 2025 Notes

  • The gym today was kinda epic. We did the strength class. We got there a little early and got a good spot. I think we are all worn out and will be sore tomorrow.

  • We flipped the schedule today so the students did environmental science while Tara and Beth went to the grocery store. We needed math chocolate desperately and pumpkin muffin season is upon us.

  • Stella Math - still working on word problems but it’s going really well

  • LJ Math - Chapter 11 - Graphing

  • Our ELA today went really well. I think we all found it helpful to have the exact paragraph structure laid out before they started writing. The writing is improving and it is happening super quickly.

  • Botanical Art - Artist of the Day: Marianne North https://www.botanicalartandartists.com/about-marianne-north.html - Outdoor Sketching and painting

We ran out of time and that is the theme of this art class. It seems like we barely get started and it’s time to pack up and head out.

Day 30 - Tuesday, Sept 30, 2025 Notes

  • Creative Writing (see CW - Day 6)

  • World Religion - so for our history today students started making the presentation for A Thousand Mothers by Kim Shelton. We will present next week and maybe we will finish on Friday -otherwise that will be homework for the weekend

  • We discussed our classic literature assignment which we will start next week. Students will write a paper discussing the symbolism of the wasps in The Shining.

  • Stella Math- still working word problems and it is still going really well. I think Stella is getting the hang of it!

  • Instead of PERT practice as scheduled, while Stella did math LJ worked on paragraph editing, typing, and other vocabulary independent work. I think this section of our plan is going swimmingly and both LJ and Stella are making remarkable progress. Both are typing somewhere close to 20 words per minute and I am so excited to see the progress from the hunt and peck style. LJ did get a headache and we discussed using a typewriter instead as a possible way to reduce screen exposure.

Day 31 - Wednesday, Oct 1, 2025 Notes

  • LJ Math - Chapter 11 - Graphing with Slope-Intercept Form.

  • Gym - ok. Speaking for myself, the gym about did me in today. We were all sore from Monday and then today we exercised in the open area upstairs with the TRX and monkey bars and other fun items. I think we go harder when it’s fun. Then we stretched and worked on our splits- they are coming along. Then sauna and ice pool. Lydia Jane tried her hand at the game Clues by Sam and while I don’t think she loved it- I think she will in time- but I am optimistic so we will see.

  • Lunch and Learn- We had tacos and we were hungry! We did not learn anything specific but conversations meandered around pleasantly.

  • Science - today we listened to chapter 11 of Silent Spring and then used the carbon footprint estimator to determine individual carbon footprints. We also watched an informational video on government spending and talked about the best way to impact environmental issues and agreed that individual efforts while admirable have nothing on the impact of law making and the EPA. It was educational even if a bit fatalistic.

  • Stella Math - well, does looking at percentage of carbon footprints around the world count? I say yes.

Day 32 - Thursday, Oct 2, 2025 Notes

  • Stella Math - almost done with word problems!

  • ELA & Graphic Design - read a short article called The Sea Also Rises about people losing their homes due to flooding along the coast of Maryland. Then answered comprehension questions.

  • Latin w/YiYa - learning declension and grammar

  • LJ Math - graphing continued

Day 33 - Friday, Oct 3, 2025 Notes

Today we considered career planning - students took a number of quizzes on personality, aptitude, and career matching. It was fun to see where they each got placed and how they thought about each suggestion.

We also enjoyed a nice walk to and from Tioga.

Beth and LJ chatted about testing anxiety for a little while.
