Squares and Cubes Practice

Squares and cubes are essential math concepts that help kids build a strong foundation for algebra and problem-solving. Squaring a number means multiplying it by itself (e.g., 3² = 3 × 3 = 9), while cubing a number means multiplying it by itself three times (e.g., 2³ = 2 × 2 × 2 = 8). Understanding these concepts makes it easier to grasp exponents, area, volume, and more.

Mastering PERT Math: A Concept Review for Success

The Florida Postsecondary Education Readiness Test (PERT) is a standardized test used in Florida to assess a student’s readiness for college-level coursework in mathematics, reading, and writing. It helps determine whether a student needs remedial courses before enrolling in credit-bearing college classes.

What’s Inside the Review Packet?

This packet provides a structured overview of math topics covered on the PERT, including:

Algebra Basics – Solving equations, inequalities, and expressions.
Fractions & Decimals – Understanding operations and conversions.
Ratios & Proportions – Key problem-solving strategies.
Exponents & Roots – Simplifying and evaluating powers.
Coordinate Geometry – Graphing and interpreting linear equations.
Word Problems – Translating real-world problems into math equations.

It is 8 pages, and I did not create an answer key (yet), since it’s (currently) designed for my students to go through in-office with me.

How to Use This Packet:

This PERT Math Concept Review Packet is designed as a diagnostic tool to help identify strengths and weaknesses before a tutoring session. To get the most out of your session, follow these steps:

📌 Complete the Packet Independently – Work through the problems (No calculator) without outside help to get an accurate measure of your current understanding.
📌 Take Your Time – The test itself is untimed, so focus on fully solving each problem rather than rushing through.
📌 Mark Areas of Difficulty – Note any concepts that feel challenging or confusing.
📌 Review Before Your Tutoring Session – Bring your completed packet to the session, along with any questions, so we can focus on the areas where you need the most support.

By using this packet as a self-assessment, students will walk into tutoring sessions prepared, allowing maximized learning and confidence for the PERT exam.

Who Takes the PERT?

  • High school students in Florida (often in 11th or 12th grade) to determine college readiness.

  • Homeschool students who want to Dual Enroll.

  • Incoming college students who haven’t met placement requirements through SAT, ACT, or other standardized tests.

Sections of the PERT

  1. Mathematics – Covers algebra, geometry, and basic problem-solving skills. NO CALCULATOR IS ALLOWED. (A pop-up calculator will come up for some problems, but don’t count on it.)

  2. Reading – Tests comprehension, inference, and critical reading abilities.

  3. Writing – Assesses grammar, sentence structure, and essay skills.

Each section consists of 30 multiple-choice questions, and the test is adaptive, meaning the difficulty adjusts based on the student's responses.

Scoring and Placement

  • Scores range from 50 to 150 per section.

  • A score of 103+ in reading, 103+ in writing, and 114+ in math typically places students into credit-bearing college courses.
