Day 14 (aka running daily log week three-ish)
Day 14 - Monday, Sept 8, 2025 Notes
Gym- this morning we walked to Tioga. We started in the downstairs open space with stretching and free weights and such. We did the leg machines and got more comfortable with doing random stuff that sparked interest.
On the way home we chatted about weightlifting class at high school and how there is generally a learning component. We talked about eccentric and concentric exercises and getting to know the gym and the movements before locking in and learning names of muscle groups and how muscles build and things such as that, but we are planning to start that probably mid-October. May as well do a bit of anatomy and physiology - even though our big science curriculum for this year is environmental sciences, it’s always good to toss in more science.
Sidequest: Moonwalking with Einstein - Memory Palace tutorial
We noticed that Lydia Jane had trouble remembering her phone number her locker number her gym number, etc., so we watched a short tutorial on making memory palaces and I think we’ve got a really incredible technique going for remembering numbers now. We will practice again and maybe do something fun like memorize up to 30 digits of pi or something like that- we’ll see…
Botanical Art/Graphic Design - We took our botanical sketches and converted them in Adobe Illustrator to background patterns and foreground images. Played a little bit with color and scale. Learned about placing and live tracing.
LJ Math: Chapter 8 - Solving equations review and Ch 8 Test - We’re gonna go back over some of these concepts (cross multiply with binomials) and retake with Form B.
Stella Math: Chapter 2, Lesson 4 - Multiplying with variables and distributive rule (Stella did a bonus Ch 2, Lesson 3 on Saturday.)
CPR Certification Modules- there again was much wailing and gnashing of teeth, but we did figure out the technology of watching all these modules, and both girls went home with homework to finish up before the class in the morning. I love that they will be certified to do CPR on kids and infants. I think it’s always a great back-pocket skill and once you’ve learned it, it’ll stay there for the rest of your life even though the techniques change overtime, they’re still pretty effective to use the old techniques so if they never do a recertification, they will still have the skill.
ELA - Continuation of Environment Unit
We worked on essays covering an article that we read from “Strangers in their own land. Anger, and mourning on the American right” by Arlie Russell Hochschild about a man named Lee Sherman and his work for PPG.
